The simplest way to get started is to download the latest release of Apache Drill and extract the contents:

Test the setup
Apache Drill includes a shell based on SQLLine. To start the shell, simply run ./bin/sqllline and specify the JDBC driver:
When you run sqlline, you should see something like this after quite a lot of log messages:
Tip: To quit sqlline at any time, type "!quit" at the prompt or hit control-D.
Run a Query
Once you have sqlline running, run a test query:
you should see a whole load of debug messages and then something like
