Overview

Apache Geode is a data management platform that provides real-time, consistent access to data-intensive applications throughout widely distributed cloud architectures.

Geode pools memory, CPU, network resources, and optionally local disk across multiple processes to manage application objects and behavior. It uses dynamic replication and data partitioning techniques to implement high availability, improved performance, scalability, and fault tolerance. In addition to being a distributed data container, Apache Geode is an in-memory data management system that provides reliable asynchronous event notifications and guaranteed message delivery.

Apache Geode is an extremely a mature and robust product that can trace its legacy all the way back to one of the first Object Databases for Smalltalk: GemStone. Geode (as GemFire™) , robust technology originally developed by GemStone Systems. Commercially available as GemFire™, it was first deployed in the the financial sector as the transactional, low-latency data engine used by multiple Wall in Wall Street trading platforms.  Today Apache Geode technology is used by over 600 hundreds of enterprise customers for high-scale , 24x7 business critical applications . An example deployment includes China National Railways that uses Geode to run railway ticketing for the entire country of China with a 10 node cluster that manages 2 terabytes of "hot data" in memory, and 10 backup nodes for high availability and elastic scalethat must meet low latency and 24x7 availability requirements.

Obtain the source archive from Geode's Github. Extract and build from source (note: currently Geode supports jdk1.7.75):

How to Get Apache Geode

You can download Apache Geode from the website, run a Docker image, or install with homebrew on OSX. Application developers can load dependencies from Maven Central.

Start the cluster

Download Geode by following one of the methods described above, and follow the installation instructions at in the posted manual at http://geode.apache.org/docs/

With a path that contains the bin directory of the installation, start a locator and server:

$ cd gemfire-assembly/build/install/geode $ ./bin/gfsh 
gfsh> start locator --name=locator 
gfsh> start server --name=server 

Create a region:

gfsh> create region --name=regionhello --type=REPLICATE 

Write a client application (this example uses a Gradle build script):

Build and run the HelloWorld example.

The application will connect to the running cluster, create a local cache, put some data in the cache, and print the cached data to the console:

Finally, shutdown the Geode server and locator:
