External services that want to call an esb can use several transports (binding components). The transport layer and the protocol layer can be decoupled : a binding component will take care of the transport layer, but may let the protocol layer be handled by a service engine in the jbi container. The most useful binding components are jms, http, email and jabber. Soap can be used as a protocol, but this is not mandatory.
