After every release we should make some announcements on various mediums to let people know about the release. There are 3 kinds of announcements that we can make which effects the format (template) and the target of the announcement. This guide will provide you with the templates to make announcements and will specify the etiquette for making announcements on various sites, mailing lists and forums.
Different Kinds of Releases
For ApacheDS we have 3 kinds of releases and a template for announcing each kind of release:
Release Type |
Version Example |
Announcement Template |
---|---|---|
Bug Fix Releases |
x.0.y (y != 0) |
|
Feature Feleases |
x.5.y |
|
Major Releases |
x.0.0 |
The Major Releases should also result in press releases through the Apache Public Relations Committee (PRC). Please email the PRC here prc@apache.org with the major release announcement for approval and ask for a formal press release be conducted through the various syndications (on the wire) we can publish press releases to. These are online magazines and press mediums.
Announcement Destinations and Etiquette
Here's a list of potential announcement targets:
- The Server Side: http://www.theserverside.com/
- LdapGuru: http://www.ldapguru.com/
- UMich LDAP ML: http://www.umich.edu/~dirsvcs/ldap/mailinglist.html
- Apache Announce: announce@apache.org
- ADD MORE!
Note that some destinations will only accept major releases like TSS. We must specify to TSS that feature releases although using minor numbers are really feature releases. So hence we can announce both major and feature release
on TSS using the respective templates.
Other destinations don't have such policies but they may so we should simply post to all of them with each announcement until we discover their policies and update this page so we comply.
