3/8 Doc Sprint

Hi all,

Having another Doc Sprint this Friday - please join us!

We currently have 47 bugs open for 4.1.0, several are unassigned at the moment. Note that almost all of these are for documenting new features - it'd be very helpful if we can get someone to pick them up and if the developer of the features can be in IRC to answer questions.

CLOUDSTACK-1478: Document baremetal kickstart
CLOUDSTACK-1442: Document BigSwitch plugin
CLOUDSTACK-1441: Document ApiDiscoverService
CLOUDSTACK-997: Improve documentation of assignVirtualMachine API
CLOUDSTACK-895: Document autoscale request handling capacity by provisioning LB appliances feature
CLOUDSTACK-883: Document 3rd party plugin feature
CLOUDSTACK-856: Document CPU and memory overcommit functionality
CLOUDSTACK-827: Document new advanced searching capabilities
CLOUDSTACK-823: Document any changes to the baremetal provisioning feature

I will try to have the new install docs done by Friday so we can test those as well.

Best,

jzb

3/1 Doc Sprint

Subject:DOCS Doc Sprint Report (Thanks!)
From: Joe Brockmeier (jz...@zonker.net)
Date: Mar 1, 2013 2:54:43 pm
List: org.apache.incubator.cloudstack-dev
Hi all,

First - thanks to everyone who showed up today for the docs sprint and
helped chase down doc bugs, triage, etc. No doubt folks have noticed all
the Jira messages and commits flying by.

We're now at 47 open docs bugs, with 9 unassigned. We had 64 bugs two
weeks ago for the docs component, and quite a few more were unassigned
then as well. Actually - the numbers are probably even better because I
identified several bugs that seem to have been fixed but haven't been
closed out yet. I've notified their owners and expect that they'll be
closed shortly.

We also identified a few issues related to UI tooltips and moved that
forward a bit, and I think it was immensely helpful to have several
folks in IRC at the same time to discuss that and figure out where it'd
gotten off-track.

I'd like to do this again next Friday - hope that we'll have as many (or
more) takers and get some additional eyes on the docs and bugs zapped.

Thanks!

jzb

[10:17] <xmltok> we are replacing a few thousand SGI scaleout series with a bunch of dell C6220s running CS

[10:18] <techpubs> jzb: are we doc sprinting?
[10:19] <xmltok> found it
[10:19] <+jzb> techpubs: we have been since 8 a.m. I can't speak for you. ;-)
[10:19] <xmltok> we can put something together
[10:20] <+jzb> techpubs: we've decided to redo all the docs in LaTeX
[10:20] <+ke4qqq> xmltok: cool
[10:20] <xmltok> are you thinking along the lines of a blog post or a talk at a conference?
[10:20] <techpubs> jzb: good one. Actually I happen to know LaTeX, so you can't scare me that easy.
[10:21] <+jzb> I actually think the docs would look nicer that way, but oh well
[10:22] <+ke4qqq> xmltok: case study we get published somehwere, talk ata con, blog post, (any or all of the above)
[10:23] <techpubs> I can proceed to sprint by simply writing some of the new feature docs I am assigned. Anything else come up today so far that I should pay attention to?
[10:24] <techpubs> Caveat: I am on hotel Internet, so if I appear to disappear, it's probably due to their spotty service.
[10:26] <xmltok> a case study might be pretty good, we wrote a blog post up on our migration to the new hardware and it got a lot of attention. a combo revamp hw+vm management might do well
[10:26] <+jzb> techpubs: no - that seems like a good plan
[10:26] <+jzb> techpubs: OK. I'm on a mifi
[10:27] <+jzb> techpubs: you might also eyeball the unassigned bugs and see if any of those are something you'd pick up.
[10:28] <+jzb> or know the appropriate victim, er contributor, to assign them to.
[10:28] <techpubs> jzb: I will also have a triage run through the 50+ open Doc bugs, see if I can comment/close/bump out any.
[10:28] <+jzb> techpubs: I went through a bunch this morning. Re-assigned all UI tooltips as UI bugs
[10:28] <+jzb> closed a few more
[10:28] <+ke4qqq> xmltok: agreed - I imagine it would get a good chunk of attention.
[10:28] <+ke4qqq> you guys are doing interesting things

[10:30] <xmltok> sounds good
[10:30] <techpubs> jzb: Docs provide the text for the tooltips, so I might re-re-assign as Doc + UI. Doc actually does most of the work to fix those.

[10:41] <techpubs> ke4qqq: The original spec, yes. But in the shorter term, we did something a lot quicker and less elegant.

[10:42] <+jzb> techpubs: "we"?

[10:45] <techpubs> jzb: Brian F and I are the "we" who implemented the first round of tooltips
[10:46] <techpubs> ke4qqq: I think this tooltip thing happened before donation to Apache.
[10:46] <+jzb> techpubs: was it brought back to the list that the original spec wasn't being followed
[10:46] <+jzb> ?
[10:46] <+jzb> I seem to recall tooltips being discussed + put in after
[10:47] <+jzb> here's the discussion from September
[10:47] <+jzbhttp://markmail.org/thread/5bu6pb6zvarva7k5
[10:47] <techpubs> jzb: You could very well be right.
[10:47] <+jzb> techpubs: "This way, we don't have a separate
[10:47] <+jzb> resource file with out-of-sync texts. We can simply tag phrases in the XML
[10:48] <+jzb> source with unique identifiers, then the code can feed those strings into
[10:48] <+jzb> the UI by mapping our text identifiers to the UI element identifiers. We
[10:48] <+jzb> did a little demo of this and it works really well.
[10:48] <+jzb> when did it switch from that to a manual process?
[10:48] <+ke4qqq> techpubs: no it didn't - the current code was done in october
[10:49] <+ke4qqq> he did cycle back to the list at end of october - I've followed up and asked a few questions - we haven't released any code with tooltips.
[10:50] <techpubs> ke4qqq: That was my next question, does Apache CS even have these tooltips.
[10:50] <techpubs> jzb: If no code on ACS has tooltips, I wonder what those tooltip bugs were that you saw...
[10:51] <techpubs> OK, since it's not clear, I will not file a bug nor start a wiki page...sounds like I was thinking of a certain "other" product :)
[10:51] <techpubs> I thought ACS had the tooltips.
[10:51] <+ke4qqq> ACS has it.....
[10:51] <+ke4qqq> will ACS release it might be in question
[10:52] <techpubs> I see. Brian F is probably the one who should bring it up again then, if you feel it wasn't decided adequately.
[10:52] <techpubs> Or any of us could, obviously.
[10:53] <techpubs> Do you want me to flag Brian and let him know this has come up?
[10:53] <+jzb> techpubs: a bunch of bugs filed by Parth
[10:53] <+jzb> CLOUDSTACK-1284

[10:54] <_ps> +keaqqq: So the tooltip widget had been prepared by me long time back and Brian F was supposed to get a python script done by a devloper to let the doc ingo fetched directly based on a xref tag ..but due to some reason it wasn't done ....and hence we hardcode them manually in a js file

[10:54] <+ke4qqq> _ps: yeah - thats a pretty major shift - I asked some questions onlist.
[10:54] <+jzb> _ps: that's not how we understood it to be done
[10:54] <+jzb> that kind of thing really needs to go to the list
[10:54] <_ps> +jzb: so that's not the case right now
[10:55] <_ps> we still need to get that process automated
[10:55] <+ke4qqq> in brian's defense - he did come to the list and indicate what had been done
[10:55] <_ps> through a  integrated pythons cript
[10:56] <_ps> +ke4qqq: ok ...the tooltip issues which you see..i'll fix them up though
[10:56] <+jzb> I am relocating briefly
[10:56] <+jzb> bbiaf
[10:57] <techpubs> Ah, those bugs. I commented on some of them.
[10:57] <+jzb> yes
[10:59] <_ps> +ke4qqq : Brian F had committed the code on my behalf since I was on a vacation and I was not a committer perhaps that time when I developed the tooltip widget and Brian took it over from there ....but yeah i'll discuss it with to get the remaining work started on tooltips-docs integration

[13:24] <techpubs> I also vote for a git class, maybe preceded/followed by a Git Cheat Sheet in the wiki.
[13:24] <+jzb> techpubs: IIRC radhika pointed to a git cheat sheet she'd put together
[13:25] <Guest57815> Hi, I am trying to deploy my own private cloud. I am using host (Ubuntu 12.10) as management server and trying to import devcloud2 in the virtualbox. But when I import devcloud2 in Virtualbox, after scrubbing free ram, I get a blank screen. Can I get any help on this issue?

[13:26] <+chipc> Guest57815: you may find the best luck on the cloudstack-dev or cloudstack-users email lists...  the guys that worked on devcloud aren't around right now
[13:26] <Guest57815> Okay !
[13:28] <techpubs> jzb: I remember now.  That quickref doesn't have "git am" in it, though, which is the recommended command in the "committer's workflow" wiki page.
[13:28] <techpubs> I'm right in assuming that is still the way to go when committing, say, a new doc patch during a doc sprint?

[13:29] <+chipc> techpubs: if the patch has the author header, then yes
[13:29] <+chipc> otherwise it's git apply-patch
[13:30] <+chipc> then you commit with "git commit -a -s --author='whomever <whomever@test.com>'
[13:30] chipc heads out

[13:32] <techpubs> Radhika's git page has this: git commit --author="Author'sname <emailID@server.com>" -m " <commit message>". Is that incorrect?
[13:34] <+jzb> techpubs: that doesn't seem right
[13:35] <+jzb> and we probably don't need that - anything we're committing that isn't our own work should likely come via Review Board
[13:35] <+jzb> and be applied with git am
[13:37] <techpubs> jzb: Maybe someone who's more of a git expert should review her quickref then, and make corrections. That wouldn't be me, btw. I know the minimum necessary git.

[13:38] <+jzb> techpubs: feel free to call attention to that on the ml
[13:39] <+jzb> I'm moderately OK with git, but not a master

[13:58] <techpubs> milamber: I remember something about CLVM being discussed, let me check.
[13:58] <+jzb> well, we're down to fewer than 50 docs bugs now
[13:58] <+jzb> for 4.1.0
[13:58] <+jzb> that's something
